Merino T-shirt for Men

A good t-shirt is the cornerstone of any wardrobe. When it's made from merino wool, you get a garment that works with your body — not against it. Merino regulates your temperature, wicks moisture away from the skin, and stays fresh far longer than cotton. That's why merino t-shirts have become the first choice for men who prioritise comfort and quality in their everyday life.

At LOOW, we design merino t-shirts in Denmark and produce them in Europe. We use mulesing-free merino wool and focus on durable materials, clean aesthetics, and honest pricing. Here's our guide to finding the right merino t-shirt for you.

What makes merino wool special?

Merino wool differs from both cotton and synthetic fibres in several decisive ways:

  • Temperature regulation: Merino fibres are naturally thermoregulating. They insulate in cold and breathe in heat. The same t-shirt works for a summer day in the city and a cool evening outdoors.
  • Odour resistance: The surface of merino fibres does not bind bacteria in the same way as cotton or polyester. You can wear a merino t-shirt for several days without it smelling.
  • Moisture wicking: Merino wool can absorb up to 35% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet. Sweat is transported away from the skin, keeping you dry and comfortable.
  • Softness: Modern merino is ultra-fine (typically 16.5–19.5 micron). It doesn't itch and feels soft directly against the skin — even for those who are normally sensitive to wool.

Choose the right weight

Merino wool fabric is measured in grams per square metre (g/m²). The weight determines how thin, light and warm the t-shirt is. We offer three variants:

135g — Ultralight: Our lightest merino t-shirt weighs almost nothing. It's perfect for hot summer days, travel and as a base layer under a shirt. Packs completely flat in a suitcase and dries quickly after washing. Ideal when you want merino's benefits without extra warmth.

160g — All-round: The most versatile weight. Thick enough to hold its shape and drape well, but light enough to wear year-round. Works equally well for the office, the weekend and a relaxed dinner. This is where most people start — and often end up staying.

220g — Midweight: A more substantial t-shirt for cooler days, autumn/winter and outdoor activities. Feels like a light sweatshirt in weight, but with merino's breathability. Suitable as an outer layer in transitional weather or a base layer under a jacket.

How to care for your merino t-shirt

Merino wool is more durable than many think, but proper care extends its lifespan significantly:

  • Wash at 30°C on a wool or delicate programme.
  • Use liquid wool detergent — never fabric softener.
  • Tumble drying is not recommended. Lay the t-shirt flat to dry or hang it up.
  • Air your merino t-shirt between wears. Often that's enough to keep it fresh.

Frequently asked questions

Do merino t-shirts itch?

No. Modern merino uses ultra-fine fibres (under 19.5 micron) that are significantly softer than traditional wool. LOOW uses 16.5 micron merino wool — it feels softer than most cotton shirts. Most people who are "sensitive to wool" find that merino is an entirely different experience.

How often should you wash a merino t-shirt?

Less often than you think. Merino wool fibres are naturally antibacterial, so they don't collect odour like cotton or polyester. Many users wash their merino t-shirt after 3–5 days of wear. Air it between uses and it stays fresh for a long time.

Is merino durable enough for daily use?

Yes, with proper care. Merino fibres are naturally elastic and return to their shape. Our t-shirts are knitted with a density that provides good durability without compromising on softness. Follow our care recommendations and your t-shirt will last for years.

Can you use merino t-shirts for sport?

Absolutely. Merino's moisture wicking and odour resistance make it well suited for running, cycling, hiking and fitness. The 135g variant is particularly popular for sport as it's ultralight and dries quickly.

Why are merino t-shirts more expensive than cotton?

Merino wool is a natural fibre that requires more to produce than cotton. In return, a merino t-shirt lasts longer, needs fewer washes and replaces several specialised garments (sport, travel, everyday). Over time, merino is often the more economical solution.
