Sofie's Guide to the Dolomites: A Road Trip Filled with Hikes

Sofie is a young adventurer who lives for great outdoor experiences. Driven by an endless passion for hiking, skiing, and cycling, she goes out into the world to create her own adventures. For Sofie, good gear is the key to creating the best memories on the trails and mountain peaks, and here she shares her very best tips so you can do the same.

NB: The recommendations in this post are based on personal experiences and are meant as inspiration. Your safety is your responsibility. Always make sure to research the route, weather conditions, and gear requirements to match your own abilities. Happy adventures!

"The best way to experience the Dolomites is in a motorhome or car, so you can control your own trip. Public transport works fine, but with your own vehicle, you have the freedom to discover more on your own terms."

Quick overview:

  • Transport: A motorhome or car gives you the most freedom.
  • Base: Cortina d’Ampezzo is a great starting point.
  • Highlights: Lago Sorapis, Lago di Braies, Piz Boè, and many more.
  • The little extra: Experience the sunset at Cadini di Misurina.
  • Local tip: Refuel at a cozy rifugio.

Sofie's Favorite Spots and Hiking Routes

Here is Sofie's personal selection of hikes and spots you should not miss.

1. Around the iconic peaks

  • Rifugio Auronzo & Tre Cime: A classic route where you hike around the three iconic peaks.
  • Loow tip: Come back in the evening to experience the magical sunset at Cadini di Misurina.

2. Crystal clear water and soft mornings

  • Lago Sorapis: A must-see with its crystal blue water. It's popular, but absolutely worth the trip.
  • Lago di Braies: Arrive before 8 am to have the magical atmosphere almost to yourself.

3. Sofie's absolute favorite

  • Passo Falzarego & Rifugio Lagazuoi: My favorite! Take the left route up to experience a via ferrata passage, which can easily be done without equipment. The area is full of remains from World War I, which gives the hike a very special dimension.

4. Panoramic views and historical charm

  • Nuvolau & Cinque Torri: Beautiful but touristy. Start early in the day to have the route more to yourself.
  • Passo Pordoi & Piz Boè: One of the absolute highlights of the Dolomites. Hike via Rifugio Pordoi and continue to the summit for a breathtaking, stunning view.

5. A gem in the heights

  • Mazzin & Rifugio Antermoia: A trip to Lago di Antermoia—a true gem hidden high up in the mountains.

The little extra: The Rifugio Culture

No matter which route you choose, you will pass a cozy rifugio. These are mountain huts where you can refuel with a hot cocoa, a good cup of coffee, or a piece of cake before continuing your hike.
